Angus students build their futures
Here for the Community
It’s important at DJ Laing that we give back to the local community which has been such a huge part of our success and we intend to continue that local support as we move forward.
D J Laing welcomed several Angus-based students who are interested in a career in construction, along to their site at Malt Loan, Carnoustie where 37 new homes are being created.
The students are taking part in a 6 week ‘Construction Skills’ programme organised by Angus Council 16+ opportunities for all team which supports unemployed 16-19 year-olds and increases their chances of employment.
The project is developed and run by Hedzup (a youth development charity) and JB Safesite, (a Tayside based health and safety specialist company) which helps the youngsters improve their skills and gain nationally recognised training and certification, such as manual handling, working at heights, fire safety and abrasive wheel safety.
The group of students was shown around the building site by Site Manager, Jim Cosgrove and Site Supervisor, Jim Livingstone who demonstrated the various components and stages of house building from foundation to kit erection to completed build. The youngsters enjoyed their experience as it broadened their knowledge and are now keen to pursue a career and gain a skilled trade.
Jim Cosgrove, Site Manager for D J Laing Homes, said:
“We would encourage and support anyone considering a career in the construction industry – there are numerous professions and opportunities available. If you complete an apprenticeship you gain skills for life so we hope to support these youngsters and provide work placements in the near future”.
